In September 2004, I was diagnosed with HIV and Hepatitis C. Only in the following year did I realize the impact that these medical diagnoses had on my life as I started putting my life together after dealing with meth and homelessness. This book is about that journey of recovery. Gay men struggle with many issues—from age to HIV—as we strive to understand how to fit into this culture. It’s dawning on some of us that we are now the adults in the room, no longer the pretty young thing at the end of the bar. Some of us turn to religion and spirituality to navigate the challenges of living as a gay man. This book is my attempt to make sense of living in this world as gracefully as I can, despite anger, fear, the impact that being sexually abused has had on me, and my shame around being HIV-positive. I am far from the only gay man who has been told the big lie: “You will never be happy.” When it comes to recovery, there is no right or wrong way to tackle addiction; there are ways that work for me but that may not work for you and vice versa. There are many pathways to recovery. This book is about mine.
I have chosen to tell my story but not because my journey is all that important. What is important is the message for those in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) community that recovery is possible: long-term recovery—of years and even decades. If you are carrying the pain of addiction, you don’t have to carry it anymore, at least not all alone. We were meant to fly, yet we often find ourselves chained to anger, fear, shame, and anxiety. We have been broken for too long. That is why I wrote this book.
When I surveyed traditional approaches to recovery, I found that much in those approaches did not resonate for me. I was hurting spiritually, and my spirit was broken, so perhaps it is not surprising that I settled on more of a spiritual path. However, I could not always find what my spirit yearned for when I turned to the church. The church’s abuses are prominently displayed in the media, much of which promotes a secular bias, maybe atheism. I am not the only one who has been disappointed by the church, although ideally, the church should be a place of healing, not just a breakfast club for rich straight white people.
Early in my recovery, I went to the church to help heal my brokenness. Yes, I found community there, but not the healing that I desired. I found people who loved conditionally. I found way too much politics (given that the Bible makes clear the distinction between God and Caesar). Gandhi said, “I love your Christ but not your Christians.” Christians talk a lot about love but welcoming it into the life of the church is another matter.
When I realized that the church was not the right place for me, I left it. Everything fell into place. On my spiritual journey, I discovered Tantra and Gnosis, the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama and Alan Watts, the writings of Martin Luther King and Wayne Dyer, and the teachings of Jesus. I realized that my inner journey was my responsibility, so I sharpened my focus and became a spiritual warrior. I discovered that each one of us is a fragile and a beautiful person. I also came to sense the urgency of awakening spiritually before it’s too late.
My hope is that this book will provide the seeker of truth the strength needed to bring healing, to find that inner spiritual warrior and support to give you the courage and the patience that you will need. I found support in peer groups and spiritual teachers. This book is a reminder that healing is best when it’s done with the help and company of others, no matter what your story.
In the following pages, you will read about how I worked through my anger and my suffering, as well as how I experienced transformation. You will see how I found love and forgiveness. I began to heal. I realized that I could fly. I learned that I was enough and that the rules that tell us how one should be didn’t work on me anymore. I was able to let go of past traumas and not worry about whether others accepted me or rejected me because they thought that I was too fat, not smart enough, or not good enough. I found my voice and realized that those who judge others are broken. I realized that I no longer had to accept the verdicts that they rendered as anything other than their opinions.
I wrote this book because there were no books out there for other men like me who have sex with men, gay men who have been down the rabbit hole of drug use who have tried the traditional ways of recovery, only to find that they didn’t work for them. I wrote this book for those who have been spiritually broken to share my story of spiritual healing. I wrote this book because of those people who have been hurt in our community by others in our community. I want to tell you that you are loved and that you matter. You don’t need to suffer anymore, even if you have been looking in many of the wrong places for love, validation, or relief from suffering.
This is your gay self-help book, and this is the story of my own recovery. It does not need to be yours. Everyone is different. However, I hope that you will benefit from the parts that resonate for you as true. I wanted to share my story of hope and life in recovery. As I type these words, I am coming upon fifteen years of recovery, so I know that this approach works, or at least I know that it works for me. I pray that you will use this as a guide to your recovery, but ultimately, it is your journey.

Bookkeeping is the process of recording and organizing a business’s financial transactions, and a bookkeeper is a person responsible for that process. Bookkeeping is the primary way business owners can figure out if their business is profitable: keeping an eye on your numbers lets you identify financial challenges early on and address them before they blossom into full-fledged crises. Bookkeeping also helps you identify areas of profit expansion—areas you might not have noticed without clear financial reports you can interpret easily.
Bookkeeping can be an overwhelming and scary task for new business owners, especially if you are not aware of basic bookkeeping terms. Join us on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm. In this class we will explore the following basic bookkeeping concepts and terms to get you moving in the right direction:
- Keeping Track of Your Business
- Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable
- The Journal
- The General Ledger
- Cash Management
- Assets/Liabilities

About Singing
Seasons and Semesters
There are officially three singing semesters in each season with a summer break in between.
- Fall Semester (September - December) - the first semester of the season
- Spring Semester (January - March) - the second semester of the season
- Summer Semester (April - June) – the third semester of the season
- Summer Break (July - August)
Dues
Members are asked to pay dues to be a singing member of the Chorus. Dues can be paid either annually or per semester. Annual dues are $150 for the year and only available as an option at the beginning of the Fall semester. Semester dues are $60 per semester and available as an option for any semester. Our policy is that no one should be prevented from singing by inability to pay dues. Scholarships are available if you need to make other arrangements for dues. If you have such a situation, you may speak with the Chorus President.
Wardrobe
For most performances, a tuxedo or suit-equivalent is required and consists of a black jacket, black trousers, black business shirt with collar, blue tie (provided by the Chorus), black socks, and black dress shoes. Other occasional wardrobe requirements are announced for concerts as necessary, but in most cases, members already have these other items in their closets. Members are responsible for purchasing the needed wardrobe items.
Music
A Chorus member can receive music either electronically, as a PDF file, or as printed scores. Many members like to download the music to their tablet or smartphone and read off of that instead of printed copies. For those who prefer to use paper, the Chorus asks that, if possible, the member print his own copy from the supplied PDF. Finally, for those who require them, section leaders can supply printed copies upon request.
Normally, all music is expected to be memorized for the concerts. This often requires spending a small amount of time outside of rehearsal to learn your music. Practice tracks are also made available for you to download so you can practice in your car or listen on a digital music player (.e.g iPod, smart phone, etc).
Let’s Talk About Race Based Hair Discrimination
Fee: $10
April 5th of 2021, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed into law measures that prohibit discrimination, discipline or disparate treatment of New Mexicans in the workplace based on their hair style, cultural or religious headdress. This session will provide an overview of historical and current race related discrimination through the regulation of hair textures and styles commonly associated with race and culture. Additionally, this session will discuss the local and state laws that include hair textures, styles, and cultural headdresses within the definition of race and prohibit discrimination based upon these characteristics.
At the conclusion of this session, attendees should be able to:
- Recognize the regulation of hair textures and styles as a specific form of discrimination
- Explain what the CROWN ACT is and its ramifications in our community
- Foster a culture that is inclusive of all people whose hair is an expression of racial/ethnic/cultural identity
